Will Clint Mathis Help? No, He Will Not

The Los Angeles Galaxy bolstered its roster by signing Clint Mathis a while ago, and the more I think about this addition, the more I feel like it will be completely insignificant. Mathis is a known scorer, yet the Galaxy's problem has always been on defense. They simply cannot stop anyone, and will go into next season lacking in that department once again.

But hey, at least the Galaxy are looking more like the Dodgers every day now, signing big name players that will contribute nothing. Anything to sell tickets right??.... as if David Beckham will not be selling enough himself.

The addition of Mathis will help offensively, because Landon "i'm too short to do anything" Donovan will continue to struggle. Donovan seems to get worse every season, and I also cannot wait for him to start his little passive protest arguments with Beckham over who gets the corner and free kicks.

In other news, the Galaxy used their #4 overall pick to select Sean Franklin out of Cal-State Northridge, and he is a midfielder. How about this, Galaxy management: Get a defensive player. If I have to watch Abel Xavier try to lead the defense again I think I will be sick. He's terrible, and also 35 years old, which means he is useless.

Maybe the Galaxy just plan to outscore opponents this year, I'm sure that's the logic behind all of these moves. Defense never wins championships, right? I'm sure that's how the saying goes...

Galaxy End Season on Loss to Fire, 1-0

Everyone counted the Los Angeles Galaxy out of playoff contention at midseason, especially after the loss of superstar David Beckham, so it was sure nice to watch the Galaxy disappoint their fans with one last failed gasp. This season was going nowhere from the start, but it sure was nice to see Beckham back in uniform for the last meaningful game...like it even mattered.

At least the Galaxy had a shot at the playoffs though, since that was certainly more than the Dodgers could do, so congratulations to the Galaxy for underachieving a little less.

The Galaxy were definitely under "Fire," the first half of the game, getting outshot 10 to 0 for shots on goal. Terrorizing Joe Cannon, the Fire were all over the field and shooting at will against a Galaxy team that appeared to have nothing to play for. Seriously, who looks tired when they're playing for a playoff spot...the Galaxy I guess. Beckham was inserted late in the 2nd half, and somehow the Galaxy were still in contention as both teams were stuck in a 0-0 tie.

By far the worst play of the game was when a Galaxy player was running towards the sideline and was absolutely clobbered by Chicago's goal keeper in the penalty area. There should have been a free kick, which Beckham would have made, and the Galaxy should have been on their way to the playoffs. But of course, the MLS officials only called a corner kick and flat out blew the call and not their whistle. The call would have come very late in the game, and since the Galaxy needed a win to make the playoffs, it was very unfortunate that the right thing did not happen.

The Fire eventually scored to make it 1-0 near the start of stoppage time, and with that wide open goal on a helpless Joe Cannon the Galaxy called it a season. I'm glad the Galaxy played hard at the end of the year, but how about the rest of it? They were terrible a lot more than they were good, so hopefully next year Beckham will have some players around him that are capable of doing something.

And if Alexi Lallas raises ticket prices for next season just because he will have a healthy Beckham to utilize, then I'm sure all Galaxy fans, including myself, will just go absolutely crazy.

Like the Dodgers' 2007 season, Good Riddance to this Galaxy one. What a disappointment, but what else is new?

Galaxy Finishing Strong: Playoffs in Sight??

Unlike the Dodgers collapse, it seems as if the L.A. Galaxy are making a playoff push as their season comes to an end. I'm not going to be too optimistic that the Galaxy will actually make the playoffs, since they've been so terrible most of the year, but at least their play of late has been an encouraging sight to see...when they're actually televised.

Do not get your hopes up too high though, because the Galaxy must win each of their last 3 games to qualify for the post-season. That is a tall order, and because Landon Donovan is so short, I'm pretty sure it will not be filled.

Despite the injury of David Beckham, the Galaxy actually have placed themselves in a position to control their own destiny by needing 3 more wins to make the playoffs. The 4-game winning streak is the Galaxy's best string of games since 2005, so the fact that they are playing well this late in the season is a good sign. Many teams who reach the playoffs are able to carry on their hot play, so hopefully the Galaxy can find a way to make it. This is an interesting story, since it seemed like all season that the Galaxy had zero chances of making the playoffs, but I still would not be surprised if they didn't. This team was just so disappointing earlier in the season, especially when they had Beckham playing, that it is hard to see them doing anything positive.

Beckham has also been rumored to return to action for the last 2 games, and maybe he will be able to provide the boost that will give this team 7 straight wins and a playoff ticket. That previous sentence was sure fun to write, but I am pretty sure the Galaxy will fail. It sure is nice to see that a 4 game streak gets Beckham back on the "pitch," and I wonder if he would have even bothered to come back if the Galaxy continued to play terribly. Who knows, but Becks is looking like he will be back, so I'm sure those ticket prices will go back up.

A Beckham-less Finish

The Galaxy have sucked all year long, and when David Beckham came they sucked a little less for a few games. Now Beckham is injured with a sprained Medial-Collateral Ligament (MCL), and the Galaxy have reverted back to their original terrible form.

Do I blame David Beckham for signing a huge $250 million contract and not playing?

No I don't, and here's why: The Galaxy organization was stupid for rushing him back from injury, and should have been more careful with regards to their investment. Sure he healed from that ankle injury for the most part, but was it a good idea for him to be playing in that Super-Liga finale vs. Pachuca after previously playing 3 games in 6 days with a 1 game rest in between? No it wasn't, and when players are tired (and Becks clearly was) they tend to be more prone to injuries occuring. Beckham was out there trying to please the fans and organization instead of taking care of himself, and although his injury was very unfortunate, I completely place all blame on the Galaxy organization for not protecting their player. Now Beckham is out for 4-6 weeks, and he probably won't be back until the start of the next MLS Season...and if the Galaxy and Alexi Lallas try to raise ticket prices and hype him up again I will just go nuts.

For the time being I want Posh Spice, or Victoria Beckham if you prefer, out on the field in a Galaxy cheerleading outfit, smiling, and distracting the other players while standing by our goal. I'm sure she can do a better job than our lazy and underachieving defense.

A Frustrated Fan: Posh, how do you feel about suiting up for the Galaxy?

Posh: Well, It's quite major. One Beckham on the field is better than none!
